Evaluation of genetic diversity and linkage disequilibrium in Korean-bred rice varieties using SSR markers Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Wang,Xiao-Qiang; Kwon,Soon-Wook; Park,Yong-Jin.
Background: In order to evaluate the variation among different rice types, the genetic diversity in a rice collection composed by 59 breeding lines, 23 landraces, 18 weedy rice lines, and 35 introduced lines that collected from countries worldwide was analyzed using 134 simple sequence repeat markers. Results: In total, 1264 alleles were identified (average, 9.43 per locus). Rare alleles made up a large portion (58.4%) of the detected alleles, and 29 unique alleles associated with rice accessions were also discovered. A model-based structural analysis revealed the presence of three subpopulations. The genetic relationships revealed by the neighbour-joining tree method were fairly consistent with the structure-based membership assignments for most of the...

Evolucao agropecuaria da regiao nuclear dos cerrados 1970-1980. Infoteca-e
Estes centros recebem, constantemente, significativo fluxo migratorio rural-rural, oriundo, sobretudo, do sul do Pais e dispoe de...

Exploring agency beyond humans: the compatibility of Actor-Network Theory (ANT) and resilience thinking Ecology and Society
Dwiartama, Angga; Centre for Sustainability, University of Otago, New Zealand; School of Life Sciences and Technology, Institut Teknologi Bandung, Indonesia; dwiartama@sith.itb.ac.id; Rosin, Christopher; Centre for Sustainability, University of Otago, New Zealand; chris.rosin@otago.ac.nz.
At first glance, the compatibility of social theory and resilience thinking is not entirely evident, in part because the ontology of the former is rooted in social interactions among human beings rather than ecological process. Despite this difference, resilience thinking engages with particular aspects of social organization that have generated intense debates within social science, namely the role of humans as integral elements of social-ecological systems and the processes through which given social structures (including material relations) are either maintained or transformed. Among social theoretical approaches, Actor-Network Theory (ANT) is noted for its distinctive approach to these aspects. ANT proposes that human and nonhuman components (both...

Factors Affecting Adoption of Monocropping of Rice in Manipur: A Logistic Approach AgEcon
Sarungbam, Diana; Prasad, Y.E..
The study conducted in the state of Manipur, has identified the factors affecting monocropping of rice as the cropping intensity of the state is only 107 per cent. Multistage random sampling has been followed to select the districts, blocks, villages and finally the farmers and logit model has been used for the analysis. The study has observed that availing of institutional credit and educational level are among the important factors which decrease monocropping. The study has highlighted the need for focus on crop diversification and increasing cropping intensity. Strengthening of co-operative societies, increasing availability and accessibility to credit facilities, increasing awareness about new technologies, etc. will help in increasing the cropping...

Foodgrain Supply, Distribution, and Consumption Policies within a Duel Pricing Mechanism: a Case Study of Bangladesh AgEcon
Ahmed, Raisuddin.
Conflict between the short run welfare of poor consumers and agricultural production incentives creates some of the most difficult policy issues facing developing countries. Resulting policy option constraints are particularly severe in very low income countries. The conflict may on the one hand impede the growth in al production essential to improve long term welfare of low income consumers, and on the other hand restrain policies to increase consumption, which in the long run is essential to the success of the measures taken to increase production. The widely observed phenomenon of urban bias in food price policy is itself a product of the nature of low income societies and of this complex conflict. This research by Raisuddin Ahmed delineates and...

Gendered Impact of Irrigated Rice Schemes’ Governance on Farmers’ Income, Productivity and Technical Efficiency in Benin AgEcon
Kinkingninhoun-Medagbe, Florent M.; Diagne, Aliou; Agboh-Noameshie, Afiavi R.; Adegbola, Patrice Ygue.
Collective actions groups have many advantages and are sometimes essential, yet they can reinforce or perpetuate inter-and intra-gender inequalities when their functioning is left entirely subject to internal community dynamics and they are not well managed. This is well illustrated by the case of Koussin-Lélé rice scheme in the central Benin. This paper apply inequality indices and frontier production function to data from a sample of male and women rice farmers to analyze the gender inequalities in access to land and the governance of the groups, and their gender-differentiated impacts on farmers' productivity, technical efficiency and income. The results show that women are particularly discriminated against with regards to access to land, with...
